Quickly

It's 6 o'clock, and I'm still at work, so I thought I'd make the most of the fast internet connection to show you pretty pictures.

Ooh, look! It's Ann's first ballband cloth!

It was surprisingly easy. It shouldn't have been surprising--people kept telling me it was easy!

And here's Grandma's stole/wrap/thing so far.

I took a poll at Stitch & Bitch last night, and the consensus was that I shouldn't double the turquoise stripe. So I'm not. See? I'm starting a new white stripe.

I just realized that the ballband cloth and the stole/wrap/thing match. Looks like I'm on a white/turquoise/lilac kick... How odd.

And now, I'm going home.

Ooh, pretty knitting. The cloth isn't hard? Knitted or crocheted? Where did you find the pattern? I'm still trying to work up the nerve to try the KAL cable dishcloth. I go in color spurts too, I think.

I'm going home now too.

Love, Mom

I meant to tell you, I followed the link to the old patterns site and downloaded the free pattern book. What a hoot to see the models in their hats and gloves and realize that was the year I was born. That's what women looked like then! Amazing!

Mom,

The cloth is knitted. The pattern came from the band around the ball of Peaches & Creme; hence the name "ballband cloth"! There's this whole crazy culture of ballband cloth knitting out there--people get addicted to making these. It's pretty easy--just knits, purls, and slipping stitches purlwise. You even carry the colors up along the side, so you don't have extra ends to weave in.

I find it odd that I'm using these particular colors; they're not ones I normally gravitate towards. It probably helps that I bought the cotton to make stuff for Abby, and I bought the other yarn particularly for Grandma.

I'm making the "Country Club" pattern from that book; I added the stripey-ness because I couldn't find enough of one color!

This is a very long comment.

Love you!
Ann

Congratulations on your first ballband, it looks great!! I am officially burnt out on that pattern after making 16 dishcloths in under two weeks. I have decided to donate all of the colors of kitchen cotton that I don't like to get them out of my life instead of trying to knit them into dishcloths.

Thanks, Robyn! I can definitely see how you could have gotten burned out on them. Does that mean you're not going to make a ballband rug, like you'd planned?

Actually, I just ordered the yarn for the ballband rug. I think it will be happier project since I am using colors I love instead of desperately trying to use up colors I don't really like.
